A ram 1, 2 is modified for pulling by attaching to the cylinder 1 a guide 7 for a sliding member 12 moved by the piston-rod 2. As illustrated, the guide 7 comprises a cylinder formed with a slot to receive a tongue 14 carried by a yoke 13 screwed to the piston-rod 2 and engaging in a slot 15 in the member 12. Taper-threaded members 20, 21 are secured to the member 12 and guide 7 by pins 19, 22 and a taper thread 23 in the yoke 13 permits the ram to be used simultaneously for pushing.
