Sept. 18, 1957 [Sept. 19, 1956; May 29, 1957; Aug. 28, 1957], No. 29348/57. Addition to 818,000. Classes 120(2) and 120(3) [Also in Group XI] In a method of crimping yarns or filaments by twisting, fixing and untwisting using a two-for-one twister according to the parent Specification, the yarn &c. is already heated to set the twist before feeding into the twister. Yarn from a feed mechanism passes through a heater and enters the twister, Fig. 1, at 16 and is guided by a tube 17 through a base member 7, then passes around a roll 15 and through a bore 13 in a head member 12, returns to the member 7 at 19 and passes through a tube 20 and a rotatable spindle shaft 5: members 7, 12 are located by stationary magnets 10, 11 coacting with softiron segments 8, 9. The heater shown in Fig. 2 comprises a steel tube 23 helically wrapped with a heating wire 24 and held by asbestos discs 27 within, and insulated by, an internally silvered, evacuated, glass vessel 25 the outer wall of which has formations 26 to compensate for differences in the longitudinal thermal expansion of the inner and outer walls: the assembly is secured by cork discs 29, 30 within a housing 28 closed by plates 31, 32. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) the vessel 25 is replaced by a filling of compacted kieselguhr powder.
