Abstract

830,696. Road vehicle spring-suspensions. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. March 6, 1957 [March 7, 1956], No. 7437/57. Class 108(2) A-wheel suspension for a motor vehicle comprises upper and lower telescopically related cylinders 79 and 77 connected to a sprung structure and a wheel supporting structure respectively, a suspension arm 73 pivotally connected at one end 74 to the sprung structure and at its opposite end to the lower cylinder 77, the suspension arm 73 and cylinders 77, 79 guiding the supporting structure and road wheel 84 during their rising and falling movements, an expansible fluid chamber between the lower cylinder 77 and the sprung structure, and a power source (not shown) for applying pressure to the fluid in the expansible chamber to resiliently support the sprung structure on the supporting structure, the expansible chamber comprising a resilient sleeve 88 having one end connected to the upper end of the lower cylinder 77. and its opposite end connected to the sprung structure. The sleeve 88 is supported during operation by concentric cylinders 89 and 91 connected to the telescopic members 77 and 79 respectively. Air or other fluid under pressure is supplied to the expansible chamber through passages 106 and 107 in an end cap 101 of the upper cylinder 79. The expansible chamber is closed at its upper end by a plate 99. The end cap 101 is rotatably connected by means of bearings 102 to a mounting plate 103 of a resilient mount 82 carried by a body panel 83. The mount 82 comprises a hollow resilient annulus. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) additional spring support is provided by a helical spring inserted between the plate 99 and the upper end of the lower cylinder 77. Specifications 772,230 and 780,602 are referred to.
