Class. 100(1) [Also in Group XXX] A coil-handling device comprises a number of gripping shoes mounted on a backplate 24 and adapted to be inserted into the interior of a coil and expanded to grip the coil. In the embodiment shown the back-plate 24, Fig. 2, is pivoted at 23 to a pair of box-girders 21 mounted on either side of the carriage 19 of a masted truck, and may be moved from a horizontal to a vertical position, or vice versa, by a pairof hydraulic rams in the box girders. Two gripping shoes 30 are pivoted to the backplate at 35, 36 and have serrated curved edges 37 and larger-radius edges 38. A third gripping shoe 31 is attached to the piston of a hydraulic ram 33, and moves against the action of springs 44 to grip the interior of any coil into which the shoes are introduced. The pivots 35, 36 allow the shoes 30 to adjust themselves to coils of varying radii, but for very large coils they are moved into the position shown in chain lines and the gripping edges 38 are used. Another embodiment is described with two back-plates, the rear plate being adapted for attachment to a masted truck such as that described in Specification 774,481, and the hydraulic mechanism being mounted between the plates. In this embodiment the plates cannot be moved into the horizontal position.
