Abstract

Shock-resistant thermoplastic compositions comprise 92.5 to 85.0 parts of rigid vinyl halide polymers and 7.5 to 15.0 parts of non-crosslinked, elastomeric polyurethanes soluble in dimethyl formamide. Specified vinyl halide polymers are vinyl chloride, vinyl fluoride and vinyl bromide polymers and copolymers thereof with one or more polymerizable mono-olefinic monomers, e.g. vinyl acetate, vinyl butyrate, vinyl benzoate, vinyl alkyl ketones, vinyl ethers, isobutylene, styrene, chlorostyrene, ethylstyrene, vinyl naphthalene, acrylic acid, ethacrylic acid, ethyl acrylate, octyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, butyl ethacrylate, acrylamide, acrylonitrile, diethyl maleate, vinylidene chloride and vinyl pyridine, which may be prepared in solution, suspension or emulsion. Specified polyurethanes are prepared by reacting polyesters, polyesteramides or polyether glycols, e.g. polytetramethylene ether glycol, with polyisocyanates, e.g. 1,5-naphthalene diisocyanate, paraphenylene diisocyanate and 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate, optionally together with water or ethylene glycol. The polyesters may be prepared by reacting glycols, e.g. ethylene glycol, with aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, e.g. adipic acid, optionally together with aliphatic diamines or ethanolamine. Resinous processing aids, e.g. copolymers of styrene, methyl styrene, vinyltoluene, ethyl styrene, monochlorostyrene, dichlorostyrene and methoxystyrene with acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, ethacrylonitrile and chloracrylonitrile, or copolymers of styrene with methyl methacrylate, stabilizers, e.g. tin mercaptide, and stearic acid, may be added, and the compositions moulded, laminated and extruded to form pipes.
