Abstract
Alpha ferric oxide of red colour suitable for use as a pigment is prepared by digesting pigmentary g -Fe2O3 in suspension in an aqueous solution containing 0.1-0.5 mol/l. of a ferrous salt of an inorganic acid at 70-100 DEG C. The g -Fe2O3 may be the natural product or produced by oxidation of natural or synthetic magnetite or dehydration of hydrated g -Fe2O3. In connection with the preparation of the starting material Specification 643,303 and U.S.A. Specifications 802,928, 857,044 re - issues, 1,392,925, 1,392,926, 1,420,985, 1,424,635 and 2,357,096 are mentioned. If the initial material contains a minor proportion of ferrous oxide, there may be added to a slurry thereof in water, an acid, e.g. sulphuric or hydrochloric sufficient to react therewith or hydrochloric sufficient to to react therewith and form Itogether with additional ferrous salt, if necessary) the solution of ferrous salt for the digestion; alternatively oxygen or air may be passed through the suspension. The ferrous salt solution preferably has a pH of 2.5-4.5 and contains no appreciable amount of free acid or ferric iron.
