Abstract

830,073. Switchgear structures. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 22, 1956 [June 22, 1955], No. 18025/55. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXVI] To guard against incorrect earthing of a bus-bar or incoming cable in metal-clad switchgear, including a circuit-breaker having an earthing function, indicating means indicate the presence of a live conductor and testing means are provided to test the indicating means. In Fig. 1, three high voltage phase conductors 1 are carried through a partition 3 of a three-phase switchgear unit by condenser bushings 2 incorporating plural conducting layers, a selected one of which is connected at each tapping 5 to a make-before-break jack 6 into which a neon bulb 4 is inserted to indicate by glow the presence of voltage on the appropriate conductor. To test for correct indication, a voltage transformer 9 is connected by switch 8 to a tapping 7 of each conducting layer to produce a glow in the neon lamps. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the test voltage is obtained from a conducting layer of a condenser bushing of a permanently energized conductor. Test and voltage indication signals may alternatively be obtained from binding wires surrounding insulating bushings.
