Abstract

830,002. Electromagnetic interaction pumps. BLAKE, L. R., and BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO. Ltd. Oct. 3, 1957 [Oct. 5,1956] No. 30506/56. Class 35. An A.C. helical interaction pump for high pressures and working on the conduction principle comprises a helical duct 1 carrying current in an axial direction between electrodes at either end, these electrodes being separately connected to spiral conductors forming magnetizing coils 10, 11 at either end producing the radial working flux. The duct comprises an inner part 2 machined to form a helical groove which is closed by an outer cylinder 3 welded in position. The ends are provided with inlet and outlet tubes 5, 6 and four segmental copper electrodes 7a-7d, only 7a and 7b being visible. Four interleaved spiral strip conductors 8a- 8d are attached to the electrodes at each end and form the magnetizing windings. The strips are insulated from each other and are connected to separate transformer secondary windings through pairs of conductors 18, 19 so that they exist as separate circuits except at the duct. The central magnetic core 9 is built up of four radial packets of laminations having end yoke portions 14 to complete the magnetic circuit with yoke portions 13 of four outer radial packets of laminations which make up the annular pole 12. The packets may have clamps of copper or stainless steel and serve to brace the duct against the pumping pressure. The best supply frequency is 15 c/s. Armature reaction compensation may be achieved by leading the inner ends of the coils between the sides of the pole part 12 of the lamination packets before connection to the duct electrodes. The packet clamps may be extended or copper laminations inserted for cooling. Specification 808,845 is referred to.
