Abstract
829,745. Automatic temperature control systems. KELVIN & HUGHES Ltd. March 31, 1958 [Dec. 31, 1956], No. 39602/56. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XII] In a furnace, the temperature in a flue 12 or of a back-wall 19 is maintained at an optimum value for a given fuel supply rate by adjustment of a damper 37 in a smoke-stack 14. The e.m.f. of a thermocouple 18 in the flue or of a thermocouple 17 contacting the back-wall is fed to a temperature controller 21 with a pointer 23 indicating temperature and a control pointer 22 positioned by gearing 28-30 driven by a device 26 responding to the rate of fuel supply by a mechanical stoker 25 to a grate 10. The output signal from the temperature controller is dependent on the position of the pointer 23 relative to the control pointer 22 and controls a damper-driving motor 36 through an interlock unit 33. The operation of a smoke-density warning device 40 through the interlock device opens the damper. With forced air supply to the furnace through a duct 46, an additional or alternative temperature controlled damper may be fitted. The controller is adjusted for change in the burning properties of the fuel by a manual device 43.
