Class 139 In a barrel for a self-winding watch the auxiliary spring d, Fig. 1, forces the outer coil of the main-spring c against the surface a<SP>1</SP> of the wall of the barrel a which surface is of a steel or steel alloy treated, e.g. by chromium plating or vacuum deposition to have a hardness at least approximately equal to that of the mainspring. Where the barrel wall and the spring are of the same material the hardness of the barrel wall is different from that of the spring. If the barrel is made of aluminium or of an aluminium alloy the hard surface a<SP>1</SP> may be obtained by an electrolytic oxidation process. In a modification, Fig. 3, a hardened ring e is force fitted into the barrel. Specification 766,191 is referred to.
