829,131. Life-saving devices. GARRETT CORPORATION. March 19, 1957 [April 3, 1956], No. 8959/57. Class 77 Life-saving means particularly for airmen wearing parachutes comprises a pair of kidney-shaped buoyant elements supported by a body harness with their mid portions under the arm-pits of the wearer. As shown, inflatable elements 10, 11, Figs. 4, 5, 6, are attached to a body harness 12, 14, 15, the elements when. deflated being stored in a pair of wallets attached to the belt 12 of the harness and having fronts formed of substantially triangular overlapping flaps 17...30, Fig. 8, held in their closing positions by a heavy cord loop 21 mounted upon the innermost flap 17 and pushed through holes in the other flaps and held in position by a pin 22. The wallets each contain an inflating cylinder 23 connected at 24 to kidney-shaped elemerit and operated by a valve lever 26 connected by a cord 25 to a knob 28 also connected by a cord 27 to the pin 22. When the wearer pulls the knob, the flaps are released and then the lever 26 opens the cylinder valve to inflate the element. The flat ends of the front portions of the inflated kidney-shaped elements abut and are held in position by quick-release means 11e, 11d, Fig. 4.
