[Also in Group XL (c)] A device for testing sheet material, particularly in rolling mills, in which ultrasonic energy from a transducer is measured after passing through the sheet under test comprises cylindrical rollers 2 and 3 of piezo-electric ceramic material, for example a mixture of titanates, so disposed on either side of the sheet 1 (as transmitter and receiver respectively) that they are in contact with and roll on the moving sheet. The interior and exterior surfaces of the cylinders 2 and 3 have a burnt-on silver layer to constitute electrodes and subsequent to radial polarization the rollers are covered with a layer 6 of material having good temperature stability and sound conductivity, such as polyvinyl chloride. The layer 6 provides protection for the surface electrode and also ensures elastic coupling of the sheet surfaces to the transducers. A breadth of 15 to 20 millimetres is suggested for the rollers, a plurality of which may be provided.
