Abstract
828,614. Discharge lamps. DEUTSCHE AKADEMIE DER WISSENSCHAFTEN ZU BERLIN. Mareh 15, 1956, No. 8138/56. Class 39(1). A dismantable high pressure discharge lamp, which contains principally rare gases at a pressure of 1 atmosphere or over, has a discharge space bounded by a metal body 1 of high thermal conductivity, e.g. of aluminium, having a thick wall for heat dissipation, main tungsten electrodes 2, a windowed aperture 9 in the body, and an ignition electrode 11 of tungsten wire coated almost to the tip with insulating material 12 such as quartz. The wall of the discharge space is lined with a tube of temperature-resistant insulating material 14 as quartz, or porcelain or is coated with aluminium oxide which can be formed by anodising. The body 1 has removable end plates 3 and 4 secured by bolts 5, the electrodes 2 being secured by bushes 1. The body 1 and/or electrodes 2 are cooled by water circulating through passages 20 via supply and discharge pipes 7 and 8. The window 9 is secured in the body 1 by a mounting 10 and can be of quartz or materials particularly permeable to the infra-red or ultra-violet spectral region. Gas is supplied to the lamp through a fine-regulating valve, the inlet 15 connected to a coupling 16 carried by the end plate 3 and the passage 17, and leaves by the outlet 18.
