Abstract
827,836. Soot blowers. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. April 4, 1956 [April 4, 1955], No. 38433/57. [Divided out of 827,835]. Class 99(2). In a soot blower having a stop valve 10 con. trolling the supply of cleaning fluid to the blower nozzle, carried by a reciprocating and rotating shaft 3, an orifice 30 producing a substantial pressure reduction in the cleaning fluid flowing to the nozzle is arranged so that replacement thereof can be carried out without disconnecting the soot blower body 1 from its cleaning fluid supply line. The stop valve 10 comprises a loose-fitting piston which, when the blower is inoperative, is held on its seat 17 by high pressure steam supplied to the space 7 and transmitted past the piston 10 to the upper side 7A thereof, opening of the valve being controlled by a relay valve 39, actuated by a cam 40 on the shaft 3, which releases the pressure in the space 7A, the valve 10 being thereupon lifted off its seat by the high pressure in the space 7 to permit the cleaning fluid to flow through the throttling orifice 30 to a pipe 6 leading to the blower nozzle. The valve 39 is arranged in a cover member 13 removal of which permits removal of the piston 10 to gain access to the replaceable valve seat 18 in which the orifice member 30 is seated, permitting replacement of orifice member 30 without disconnection of the steam supply pipe connected to chamber 7. A projection 27 on the upper side of piston 10 enters an orifice 28 near the end of the upward stroke of piston 10 to throttle the escape of fluid from chamber 7A and cushion the impact of the piston on the cover member 13. Specifications 533,609 and 636,052 are referred to.
