Abstract

Class 64(3) [Also in Group XXVIII] A compressed air cooler comprises concentric inner and outer casings 23, 24 forming an annular space 30 between them which contains a coiled finned tube 31 through which circulates a cooling fluid. The inner casing 23 is welded at its lower end to a flange 28 and is provided at its upper end with an anchoring flange 25. The outer casing 24 is provided with a cap 42 forming passage means 43 for the compressed air and bolts 26 secure the inner casing to the cap thereby clamping the outer casing 24 between the flange 28 and a flange 40 of the cap thus preventing any transverse movement between the inner and outer casings. A transverse partition 25 is provided in the inner casing 23 so that compressed air entering through the passageway 43 passes through the annular space 30, where it is cooled, and flows through ports 27 at the bottom of the inner casing to the outlet formed by tube 55. Tubes 49, 50 in the inner casing having helical vanes 51 between them form a water separator for the air passing through the cooler. The inner casing 23 may be provided with an extra wall 47 forming a heat insulating space 48 which may be filled with fibreglass. In a modified form the inner casing is bell shaped at its lower end to engage the lower end of the outer casing and the upper end of the inner casing is closed, the inner casing being clamped by a single bolt from the end cap of the outer casing to the enclosed end of the inner casing. In this case the outer casing is provided with an inlet for the compressed air at its lower end which flows through the annular space to the passage formed by the end cap and then to the water separator, the whole unit being of a substantially inverted U-shape. In a further modification a bolt passes axially through the inner casing and clamps the inner casing between a transverse bar welded across the upper end of the outer casing and an arcuate transverse member provided in the lower end.
