Apparatus for gauging radial play in an assembly of relatively rotatable components comprises a gauging device to measure the relative radial movement between the components resulting from successive application of opposed forces while the components are relatively rotated by a power drive. As shown, for measuring radial play in bearings, the bearings are placed on a belt 11, and guided one at a time into a pocket 18 in a transfer plate 20. This then moves forward and carries the bearing along a shoot 24 to the gauging station 25, where the inner race is held between a plate 40 and a clamp 44. The plate 20 then returns to the position shown in Fig. 1 and the outer race is rotated, first by wheel 57 and then by wheel 58, Figs. 9 and 10, the spacing between which is adjustable. The force applied by these wheels 57, 58 to the bearing can be adjusted and is produced by air-operated bellows. A lever 41 is in continual contact with the outer periphery of the bearing and actuates a fluid leakage valve, altering the pressure in a pneumatic system in accordance with the radial play. This change in pressure is amplified and passed to a device which operates electrical contacts to control a sorting mechanism, according to whether the play is above, below, or between predetermined tolerance limits. If above or below these limits, when plate 20 moves forward with the next bearing, the previously gauged bearing is moved on to an open trapdoor 120 and discharged down one of two " reject " shoots. If the play is within the limits, the trap-door 120 does not open and at the next movement the bearing is carried further along the shoot 24 to an " accept " position.
