Abstract
826,816. Dental mirrors. CODONI, A. Feb. 17, 1958 [Feb. 22, 1957; Oct. 25, 1957], No. 5020/58. Class 81 (2). [Also in Group XXIII] A dental mirror has separate conduits for supplying liquid and gas and control means enabling liquid and gas to be supplied alternately through a common conduit to the mirror surface for cleaning purposes. Pipes 2, 3 for water and compressed air, respectively, are disposed within the handle 1 of the mirror. The pipes 2, 3 open into a conical bore 5 in which a three-way cock 4 having a passage 29 is rotatably mounted. A leaf spring 6 holds the cock 4 in the bore 5. A pin 27 engages a groove 28 in an upwardly projecting control knob 26 of the cock 4 to limit its rotation. In one limiting position of the cock 4 water flows from the pipe 2 through the passage 29 to a bore 17 at the forward end of the handle and thence through a pipe 18 which is detachably connected in the bore 17 and is carried by a detachable mounting member 19 to a nozzle 23. The nozzle 23 is located near the intersection of the longitudinal axis of the handle 1 and the plane comprising the edge of the mirror surface 22 and directs water or gas against the mirror surface. In the other limiting position of the cock 4, air from the other pipe 3 passes to the nozzle 23. Normally the cock 4 is set between the two limiting positions so that flow of air and water to the nozzle 23 is prevented. The rear ends 12 (not shown) of the pipes 2, 3 project from the handle 1 and are connected to flexible water and air supply pipes. The mirror 21 has a support 20 screwed into the mounting portion 19 which may be fitted on the handle in either of two positions so that the mirror may face in either of two opposite directions. In an alternative construction valves (not shown) control the flow of water and air from the pipes 2, 3 to the nozzle. A cylinder with a radial bore replaces the three-way cock and on rotation in one direction from a neutral position opens one valve, rotation in the opposite direction opening the other valve.
