Abstract

826,731. Stuffing-box substitutes. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Aug. 31, 1956 [July 29, 1955], No. 21930/55. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XL (c)] A variable electric component such as a resistor is housed within a hermetically-sealed container and is adjusted from outside the container by arranging that a portion of the wall of the container be flexible to permit a mechanical transmission to be effected through the wall of the container without any coupling actually penetrating the wall. The container may be evacuated or alternatively filled with air or another gas under pressure. In the arrangement illustrated the container 13 is a bellows construction, rotation of the knob 20 causing movement of the upper surface of the container and hence rotation of the shaft of the variable resistor 16 through a rack-and-pinion gearing 24, 25. Other forms of gearing both between the manual actuating member and the movable wall of the container and between the said wall and the shaft of the variable component are also described. Furthermore it is also stated that the container need not be of bellows construction; it may instead comprise rigid side walls but have a flexible end wall.
