Abstract

826,579. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 24, 1958 [Jan. 28, 1957], No. 3035/57. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XI] A discharge lamp or incandescent filament lamp arrangement has a clip spring 11 arranged to support one end of a sleeve 9 relatively to a tubular envelope 10 of the lamp, which clip consists of a length of resilient metal wire, e.g. 24 S.W.E piano wire, of crenellated form, Fig. 4, fitted on to the end of the sleeve with alternate crenellations 12, 13 resiliently engaging the inner and outer surfaces of the sleeve respectively, the clip including bridging portions 14 between consecutive crenellations which span the thickness of the wall of the sleeve, and parts 15 of at least some of the crenellations which fit within the sleeve being spaced therefrom and bearing resiliently against the outer surface of the envelope so as to support the end of the sleeve resiliently against transverse and longitudinal movement with respect to the envelope. The envelope and sleeve can be of circular cross-section or one can be elliptical. In the case of an incandescent filament lamp the sleeve can be of light-diffusing or coloured glass on a straight tubular envelope with a spring clip at each end. A discharge lamp can have a straight tubular envelope or can be a sodium vapour discharge lamp as described in Specification 801,482 or 816,043, which lamps comprise a U-shaped envelope 10, Fig. 1, mounted or arranged for mounting within an evacuated heat conserving outer jacket 2 and provided on each limb with a sleeve 9 of transparent heat insulating material such as glass. A spring support 6 clips on to the envelope 10 and is provided with members 7 which extend into contact with the jacket 2. A starting wire is attached to each electrode lead-in wire 8, the wires winding helically around each sleeve 9 and being attached to an insulating tag 17 carried by the support 6. The other ends of the sleeves can be supported by further spring clips or other means.
