Abstract

826,296. Axial-flow fans. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. Sept. 9, 1957 [Sept. 8, 1956], No. 28390/57. Class 110 (1). [Also in Groups XXVII and XXIX] An I.C. engine cooling fan 8 is driven by the engine via an hydraulic coupling 7 which an outflow resistance 19 retains completely filled and therefore substantially slip-free up to a speed determined by a valve 22 controlled by a thermostat 21 in an engine cooling water exit duct. The coupling 7 has a double runner 13 driven by a double impeller 12 mounting a drive pulley 11, and is supplied with sump oil continuously circulated by a pump 26 via the valve 22, a duct 28, fixed scoop tubes 16, a duct 29 and an interchangeable Venturi 19. A bore 20 always allows a minimum flow through the valve 22 which, with increasing engine coolant temperature, is progressively opened to retain complete coupling filling up to correspondingly higher engine speeds. Once slip has set in it increases with engine speed to a point where fan speed decreases as engine speed increases.
