Abstract

987,109. Fluid couplings. KLEIN, SCHANZEIN & BECKER A.G. May 24, 1961 [May 27, 1960], No. 18680/61. Heading F2C. [Also in Division F1] An hydrodynamic clutch for driving the cooling fan of a motor vehicle engine comprises a supply or compensating tank 3 connected to the working chamber of the clutch by a supply pipe 5, an aerating or venting pipe 6, and a fixed scoop tube 4 which acts as a discharge pipe and has its opening between the pump and turbine wheels 1, 2 and facing the flow from the pump wheel, and a valve 7 controlling the degree of filling of the clutch. The fan is secured to the turbine housing 2 which is driven by fluid from the pump 1 secured to a pulley 9 connected by a belt to the engine, the pump and pulley being mounted on bearings 8 on a fixed shaft through which passes the pipes 4, 5, 6. The control valve is in the form of a throttle valve 7 in the supply pipe 5 and is controlled by an element responsive to the temperature in the cooling system of the engine so as to vary the degree of filling of the clutch and hence the speed of the fan. The scoop tube has an aerofoil cross-section to provide minimum resistance to the flow of fluid in the clutch; a throttle disc may be provided in the scoop tube to restrict the discharge from the clutch. In an alternative embodiment, the control valve is in the form of a piston valve which, in one position, connects the supply pipe to the tank and in an alternative position connects the scoop tube to the tank.
