Abstract

Serum albumin is separated from human or animal blood by mixing the plasma thereof with acidified organic liquids in which the albumin but not the globulins are soluble, separating the solution of the albumin from the insoluble matter, treating the separated solution with an organic or inorganic base, and washing and collecting the precipitated albumin. The organic liquid may be a lower aliphatic alcohol or ketone containing up to four carbon atoms, e.g. methanol, ethanol, propanol or acetone, which may be acidified by a strong organic acid, e.g. formic or acetic acid, halogenated acids excluding trichloracetic acid such as chloracetic or chlorpropionic acid, or hydroxy acids such as lactic, citric, tartaric or salicylic acid, or strong inorganic acids, e.g. hydrochloric or sulphuric acids. The albumin may be precipitated at a pH of 4.5 to 6 and the base used may be a 10 N solution of an alkali metal hydroxide or an organic base, of which the salt is soluble in the solvent mixture.
