Abstract

826,189. Turning. NORTON & CO. Ltd., Sir J. F. May 27, 1958 [April 15, 1957], No. 12184/57. Class 83 (3). In a billet-peeling or centreless bar-turning- lathe, bars or tubes 2, Fig. 1, are supplied by a crane to a low-level stillage 8, from which they are raised singly to grippers on a carriage 4 which holds the bar against rotation and feeds it axially through a rotary-tool-head 1, the finished bar being received by grippers on a carriage 6 and then deposited on a dischargestillage 23. The bars supplied to the stillage 8 roll down the inclines, the lowest bar resting against stops 9, Fig. 2, pivoted at 10 to a linkage 12 which is actuated by a fluid-pressure cylinder 13 to lower stops 11 and raise stops 9, thus allowing the lowest bar to rest against the latter. Fluid-cylinders 17 are then actuated to raise rollers 14 lying under the lowest bar, which lift the bar into position to be engaged by grippers in the carriage 4, Fig. 4. The carriage is then traversed on ways 5, Fig. 1, by a fluidcylinder, until the bar is engaged by serrated driving-rollers 3, which assist in feeding it through the cutter-head 1. On emerging from the head 1, the finished bar is received by grippers in carriage 6, and when free of the head, is deposited on rollers 19, Fig. 7, which are then lowered by fluid-cylinders to lay it on the ramps 23. The bars roll down these ramps but are held at intervals by stops 28, which are lowered by a fluid-operated-linkage alternately with the raising of stops 24 adjacent the rollers 19. In a modification, the pivoted stops are replaced by dogs 45, Fig. 9, which slide vertically and are raised by chains 46 attached to an intermittently-rotated roller 47, which also carries pinions 41 engaging racks 42 attached to lifting- rollers 19. Thus, when rollers 19 are lowered on the discharge-side of the machine, dogs 45 are raised to lift a bar thereon over stops 44 on the ramps to allow it to roll to an adjacent set of stops, and a similar set of dogs on the supplyside of the machine work alternately with the rollers 19.
