Transfer mechanism for transferring rods or tubes b to a swaging machine comprises two vertically movable members e each normally of Y-shape and having two oppositely inclined arms el, e<SP>3</SP>, whereby during upward movement of the members one arm e<SP>1</SP> lifts a rod or tube b to be swaged from a supply staging a, the two arms at their junction engage a swaged tube b<SP>1</SP> lift it from the machine and subsequently convey it to a discharge point, Fig. 3 (not shown), and thereafter means e<SP>2</SP> on the arm e<SP>1</SP> transfer the new rod or tube to the junction of the arms, Fig. 4 (not shown) which deposits it in the machine. The arm e<SP>1</SP> is integral with the stem e whilst the arm e<SP>2</SP> is pivoted and is connected to the floor by a flexible cable f. The members are raised and lowered by a pneumatic or hydraulic motor d and during the upstroke pivoted spring-loaded or gravity-controlled claws e<SP>2</SP> engage and hold the workpiece b, Fig. 2 (not shown). After engagement with the swaged workpiece b<SP>1</SP> the arm b<SP>1</SP> is lowered sufficiently for this workpiece to roll off on to a finished pile, Fig. 3 (not shown). During the subsequent downstroke the claw e<SP>2</SP> is tripped by engagement with the end of the staging a, Fig. 4 (not shown), and allows the new workpiece to roll down to the junction. This mechanism may be used to transfer rods or tubes to the feed vice mechanism c of a rotary swaging machine as described in Specification 794,649. The workpieces b may be fed down the staging a by a roller.
