Abstract

826,060. Gas fired furnaces. SOUTH EASTERN GAS BOARD. March 28, 1958 [April 3, 1957], No. 10964/57. Class 51 (1). A furnace is heated by gas burner jets 26 directed towards an opening 13 into the heating chamber 12 through a slot 24 in a baffle 23. The jets, in the form of holes in a gas pipes 25, are sufficiently spaced from the baffle 23 to allow primary air to be entrained by the gas through the slot 24. Secondary air enters the opening 13 through passages 19 formed between the recessed refractory body 11 of the furnace and the baffle 23, which comprises metal trays filled with refractory material. A muffle 18 is supported in the heating chamber 12 by transverse bearers 16 and a longitudinal bearer 17 of V-section engaging notches in the transverse bearers 16. The longitudinal bearer 17 protects the base of the muffle 18 and helps to divert the flames round the muffle. A reverberating furnace, Fig. 5, is heated by two rows of jets from pipes 45, spaced from slots 44 in baffles 43 arranged below a slot 41 leading to the heating space 40 and divided by a longitudinal bearer 38 carrying the hearth 36. Secondary air enters the slots 41 through a recess 46 formed in the refractory lining 47 of the furnace casing and holes 48 in the metal furnace casing 42. Transverse L-shape bearers 37 support the sides of the hearth 36. The slots in the baffles may be replaced by rows of holes.
