Abstract

826,017. Velocity-modulated tubes. TELEFUNKEN G.m.b.H. Feb. 13, 1956 [Feb. 12, 1955], No. 4377/56. Class 39(1). In a reflex klystron the collector 6, 8 closely surrounds the beam entering the resonator so that for a beam perveance such that the ratio of the diameters of the beam leaving and entering the reflectory space is from 1À5 : 1 up to 3 : 1, substantially all the electrons strike the collector. This avoids hysteresis due to multiple electron transits in the resonator the transit time in the reflector space is 1À5#, 3À5# or 5À5# radians. 6 and 8 may be separate electrodes and the aperture in 6 or 8 surrounds the beam as closely as possible. Only the electrons in the centre of the beam can return to the cathode space and to minimise this, the cathode can produce a beam with a smaller current density at the centre, e.g. an annular beam. The beam spread on reflection is due to space charge repulsion which is greater than the focusing effect of the reflector. The diameter of the beam on entry to the reflector space is 1/10 the diameter of the resonator, or less, to decrease the capacitive loading of the resonator by the electron beam, and the tube is tuned electronically. The height of the cylindrical wall of the reflector is “ its diameter.
