Abstract
825,013. Electric water heaters. RELF, V. K. Aug. 10, 1956 [Sept. 14, 1955], No. 24486/56. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XIII] Water heating apparatus comprises an electrically heated tank in which the water is held at a temperature above atmospheric boiling point under sufficient pressure to prevent actual boiling, the filling and temperature of the tank being controlled by a pressure or thermostatic control electrically connected both to the heating element and a solenoid inlet valve. As shown, a thermally insulated tank 1. has a. heating element 10 and a water supply connection 4 leading into the steam head of the tank 1 at point 7 via a solenoid valve 6, a restricting valve 5 also being fitted if the supply is of high pressure. Both the valve 6 and the element 10 are electrically connected to a pressure or thermostatic control switch 11. A float switch 12 operated by a float 14 and float arm 13 is electrically connected in series with the control 11 and the valve 6. A pressure release valve 15 with a two way air bleed valve 16, and a hot water outlet valve 9 are also provided. On heating, air escapes through the bleed valve 16, which then closes until the steam pressure reaches, for example 6 lbs. per sq. inch, at which pressure the control 11 is set to switch off the element 10 and open the solenoid valve 6, thus allowing cold water to enter and cool the tank contents and lower the pressure to, or example, 5 lbs. per sq. inch. At this point, the control 11 is set to close the valve 6 and re-energize the circuit. This heating and filling cycle continues until the water reaches a predetermined level, set by the float 14, when the float switch 12 operates to break the circuit to valve 6, leaving the control 11 to maintain the required temperature and pressure. On opening valve 9 hot water emerges under pressure via a pipe 8, and the float 14 drops to reverse the switch 12, thus allowing the filling and heating cycle to re-commence.
