Abstract

1,009,886. Control systems for electric heating devices. J. ARCHER, and J. L. OWNER. Feb. 12, 1962 [Feb. 11, 1961], No. 5164/61. Heading H2H. A heating device comprising a heating element 4 surrounded by a non-distortable tube containing a fluid such as air is provided with temperature regulating apparatus which comprises two switches, a cycling switch having contacts 8, 9 which are operated by a bellows 3 responsive to changes with temperature in the pressure or volume of the fluid in the tube surrounding the heating element 21 and a thermal switch 15 having contacts 16, 18, the contact 18 being carried by a bimetal strip 19 having an associated heater 20. The heater 20 and the switch contacts 16, 18 are connected in series with the heating element 21 and the contacts 8, 9 are connected in parallel with the heater 20. Whilst the heating device is below a predetermined temperature set by an adjuster 14 the contacts 8, 9 are closed to shortcircuit the heater 20, the heating element 21 then being continuously energized. At the preset temperature expansion of the fluid in the tube surrounding the heating element 21 causes the bellows 3 to open contacts 8, 9 which then allows the switch 15 to cycle the' contacts 16, 18 in a normal manner to regulate the energy supply to the heating element 21. In a second embodiment the contacts 16, 18 are replaced by a microswitch operated by the bimetal strip 19. The device may be used to control refrigerating apparatus.
