Abstract

The invention comprises the mono-vinyl-, divinyl- and mono-methyl-mono-vinyl esters of terephthalic acid and processes for the preparation thereof wherein terephthalic acid or the mono-methyl ester thereof is reacted with acetylene at an elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a mercury, cadmium or zinc salt of terephthalic acid or a mixture thereof; or wherein a mono- or di-salt of terephthalic acid or a salt of the mono-methyl ester of terephthalic acid is reacted with a vinyl halide, e.g. the chloride or bromide, at an elevated temperature. Solvents mentioned for use in the process are high-boiling point hydrocarbons, e.g. xylene, kogasin and dimethyl formamide in admixture and dimethyl terephthalate. Examples are furnished.
