Abstract

In the manufacture of vinyl chloride by passing a mixture of acetylene and hydrochloric acid gas over a mercuric chloride catalyst the process is improved by passing the reaction mixture over a nickel chloride catalyst before passing it over the mercuric chloride catalyst. Preferably the reaction mixture is passed over the nickel chloride catalyst at a temperature in the range 110-160 DEG C. and at a volumetric rate from 5 to 8 times higher than the volumetric rate at which it is passed over the mercuric chloride catalyst. The nickel chloride catalyst may be prepared by impregnating a porous support with a solution of nickel chloride and evaporating the excess water. In the example a mixture of acetylic and hydrochloric acid with traces of chlorine was passed first over a nickel chloride catalyst and then over mercuric chloride to give vinyl chloride.
