Abstract

Sugars are fermented with yeasts Saccharomyces rousii or Saccharomyces mellis and glycerol is recovered from the resulting mixture. The fermentation is normally carried out with aeration and in the presence of a nitrogenous agent such as corn steep liquor and/or yeast extract, which may be used in conjunction with a further nitrogenous agent such as urea, ammonium sulphate or ammonium tartrate. Suitable yeasts in the fermentation may be obtained from brood comb pollen, fermenting honey, "sugared" dried fruits and fermenting jams, jellies and syrups. In general, the fermentation takes place in sugar concentrations of the order of 20-40%. Examples are given of the fermentation of glucose solutions to give various mixtures containing D-arabitol and erythritol in addition to glycerol, from which the glycerol may be separated, for example, by crystallizing and subsequent separation of D-arabitol.ALSO:Sugars are fermented with yeasts Saccharomyces rouxii or Saccharomyces mellis and one or more of the alcohols D-arabitol, erythritol and glycerol (see Group III) are recovered from the resulting mixture. The fermentation is normally carried out with aeration and in the presence of a nitrogenous agent such as corn steep liquor and/or yeast extract which may be used in conjunction with a further nitrogenous agent such as urea, ammonium sulphate or ammonium tartrate. Suitable yeasts for the fermentation may be obtained, for example, from brood comb pollen, fermenting honey, "sugared" dried fruits and fermenting jams, jellies and syrups. In general, the fermentation takes place in sugar concentrations of the order of 20-40%. Examples are given of the fermentation of glucose solutions to give various mixtures containing D-arabitol, erythritol and glycerol.
