Abstract

Tea leaves are sprayed with liquor containing at least 80% alcohol before the fermentation stage of their manufacture. Preferably, 1 to 5 fluid ounces of spirits of wine containing 2 to 10 gms. fructose is used. The leaves may be passed through a stream of droplets coming from an atomizer. In the example given, 10 gms. fructose were dissolved in 5 fluid ounces of the spirits of wine (ethyl alcohol) and the solution was sprayed on 1000 lb. of unfermented tea leaves. The leaves were then rolled, fermented and finally processed. The liquor may then contain colouring matter. The Provisional Specification describes also the application of the process to tobacco and other similar leaves.
