Abstract

Torula (Torulopsis) utilis is cultivated on a substrate of molasses waste liquors from the production of citric acid having specific gravities of 1.03 to 1.075 and containing sugars and/or nutrient organic non-sugars, vigorous aeration with finely divided air being employed. As substrates, liquors of specific gravities 1.03 to 1.045 and sugar contents 1.0 to 2.5 per cent, or of specific gravities 1.04 to 1.075 and sugar contents 0 to 1 per cent and containing a sufficient proportion of organic non-sugar nutrient are especially suitable. According to an example, 3.75 1. waste molasses liquor containing 4.2 per cent reducing sugars and of specific gravity 1.072 is acidified to pH 4.5, ammonium sulphate, diammonium phosphate and superphosphate are added and the liquid is boiled with aeration for 20-30 minutes. After replacing the water lost by evaporation, filtering and making up to 7.5 l., the solution had a specific gravity of 1.034 and sugar content of 2.1 per cent. Fermentation was started with 1.5 l. and an inoculum of 50 g. adapted seed yeast Torula utilis at 28 DEG C. Further quantities of solution were added from time to time, the maximum influx being reached after 4 1/2 hours, the temperature raised to about 31 DEG C. and the air rate increased from 300 l./hr. at the start to 750 l./hr. at the maximum influx. During the further course of fermentation the influx was decreased and within the ninth hour the temperature was reduced to 28 DEG C. A total of 550 g. yeast (25 per cent dry matter) was obtained.
