Abstract

315,263. Verhave, T. H. July 10, 1928, [Convention date]. 2 : 3-Butylene glycol is prepared by fermenting with suitable bacteria a mash containing carbohydrates, nitrogen compounds, phosphates, and carbonates The bacteria mentioned are Clostridium polymyxa and Aerobacter aerogenes; the carbohydrates may be mashes of maize and potatoes (which may have been saccharified with malt-diastase, bacterial diastase or acids); mashes of rye, barley, wheat, oats, buckwheat, or cassava, raw materials containing sugar such as beet or cane molasses, sorghum, maple and palm sugar and other materials which have been used for the production of spirit, and also materials containing milk-sugar such as skimmed milk and whey; the nitrogen compounds mentioned are nitrates, inorganic ammonium salts, and urea; suitable phosphates are phosphorite and superphosphate. Air may be blown through during the fermentation. In the examples, (1) a mash of potatoes and malt, after saccharification, is boiled and cooled to 41‹ C., superphosphate and limestone are added, and then a malt-extract culture of Aerobacter aerogenes, air being blown through the mash; the fermentation is finished in 33-39 hours, when alcohol is distilled off and the remaining liquor is concentrated and distilled under vacuum to recover the 2 : 3-butylene glycol; (2) cane-sugar molasses is mixed with water, phosphorite, ammonium sulphate and limestone and fermented at 43‹ C. with a culture of Clostridium polymyxa in whey, air being blown in as before.
