Oct. 10, 1957 [Oct. 18, 1956], No. 31701/56. - Class 120(2) [Also in Group XVI] Drafting apparatus includes means for varying the diameter of a driven drafting roller so as to vary the draft in accordance with thickness variations. Before entering rollers 2, 3, the sliver 1 passes through a gauge 6 that provides a mechanical movement proportional to the thickness of the sliver. This movement is transmitted to a proportional controller 7 that applies pneumatic pressure to a roller 5 to alter its diameter. Another gauge 10 and controller 11 transfer signals to the controller 7 for resetting the latter controller if necessary. The signal from the gauge 6 may be delayed in order to adjust for sliver movements. In alternative forms, the signals from the gauges may be electrical and the controller 7 may provide hydraulic pressure. The roller of variable diameter may consist of a resilient e.g. rubber, sleeve subjected to varying axial pressures or a hollow sleeve that is radially expansible under fluid pressure (see Group XVI).
