Abstract

823,747. Valves. UNION DES GAZ LIQUIDES MODERNES. May 2, 1957 [May 18, 1956], No. 12992/57. Class 135. In a tap having a spigot 1 for attachment to a receptacle, e.g. for liquified gas, a union 2 for connection to an apparatus, a vertical fluid flow passageway 8 in the spigotedpart, and a valve element 4 for controlling the flow through the passageway, a safety device comprises a tubular element 9 fitted in the vertical passageway and having its lower end open and its upper part 9a of smaller cross - sectional area than the passageway at that part, the tubular-element also having an orifice 10 at its upper end and an orifice 11 below the end in the side, and containing two balls 12 and 13 held therein by lugs 14. In response to a fluid impulse of a predetermined intensity through the tap, e.g. caused by removing union cover 3 whilst the valve element 4 is in an open position, the balls ascend to seat on and close the orifices, whereas at normal flow rates the balls remain in the position shown. The longitudinal distance between the orifices is sufficient to allow both balls to be accommodated between them, such that when the receptacle and tap are inverted for emptying the balls collect at the inner end of the tubular element and leave the lateral orifice uncovered. The main tap closure member 5 is actuated by a screwed spindle engaging the valve cover. The valve member may be sealed against leakage by an O-ring engaging the bore of the valve body, and additionally in the fully open position shown, by an O-ring abutting the valve cover.
