Abstract
823,310. Change-speed gear. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 1, 1957 [May 4, 1956], No. 13891/57. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXVIII] Relates to a gramophone change-speed gear of the type comprising a stepped driving-wheel 4 engaged by a friction idler disc 2 mounted on a lever 5 supported on a bracket 6 pivoting on a shaft 8, the idler disc 2 engaging the rim of a turntable 1. A spring 3 biases the idler disc 2 to engage the stepped driving wheel 4 and the turntable rim. A flange 11 on the bracket 6 is adapted to be engaged by a coned disc 13 when a push-button 12 is depressed. Such operation of the push-button 12 causes the coned disc 13 and flange 11 to coact in such a way that the bracket 6 &c. is first turned slightly against the bias of the spring 3 to disengage the idler disc 2 from the steps on the driving wheel 4. Further depression of the push-button then forces the bracket 6 downwardly of Fig. 3 against the bias of a spring 10 on its supporting shaft 8. The bracket 6 is formed with a curved indexing plate 15, Fig. 1, having an aperture 16 shaped as shown in Fig. 6, and co-operating with a pin 17 passed transversely through the shaft 8. Downward movement of the bracket 6 and the indexing plate 15 causes the upper edge of the aperture 16 to coact with the pin 17 and turn the shaft 8 anti-clockwise of Fig. 1. On releasing the push-button, the bracket 6 &c. is pushed upwardly by its spring 10 so that the lower surface of the aperture 16 re-engages the pin 17. The lower surface 18-20 of the aperture 16 is so shaped that the bracket 6 &c. returns to a different position axially of the shaft 8. Accordingly the idler disc 2 engages a different step on the driving friction wheel 4, and the gear gives a different ratio. When one end of the pin 17 leaves the end 20 of the aperture 16, the other end of the pin enters the opposite end of the aperture. A speed indicating disc 24 is secured to the end of the shaft 8. As a modification, the pin 17 may be arranged to be moved initially against spring bias, the indexing plate then turning on release of the pushbutton.
