Abstract

823,270. Collapsible boxes. RIGID CONTAINERS Ltd., and BURDITT, H. Oct. 17, 1957 [Oct. 23, 1956; Jan. 1, 1957], Nos. 32266/56 and 47/57. Class 18. A collapsible box of cardboard or like material having an octagonal inner surface has its base 1, Fig. 4, and its vertical walls made in one piece ; lateral extensions on its opposite side walls 7 each extension comprising a first or inner section 9 adjoining the parent side wall 7 and constituting one of the vertical walls that will be disposed obliquely across the corners of the erected box, Fig. 1 ; a second or intermediate section 10 ; and a third or outer section 11, the sections 10 and 11 being adapted to be folded back on one another to embrace a corresponding end portion of or on an adjacent end wall 3 of the box. As shown the end walls 3 have slots 4, Fig. 3, through which the folded sections 10 and 11 can pass, the section 11 being then folded back around the edge 16 of the wall 3 under a projection 17, Fig. 4, on said edge. The sections 9 are shorter than the side walls 3 and 7 to allow for ventilation when a lid is applied. Recesses 22 may be formed in the side walls 7 to provide further ventilation. In a modified form avoiding the use of the slots 4, the second section 10 is simply folded back to lie against the inner face of the end wall 3 whereafter an upstanding tab on the upper edge of the end wall 3 is folded down over the section 10, the third section 11 being then folded back to enclose the tab.
