Abstract

823,228. Stapling fibres. BLASCHKE, E. Feb. 22, 1956 [Feb. 28, 1955], No. 5521/56. Class 120(3) Apparatus for continuously cutting strips or ribbons of continuous filaments into staple lengths comprises a series of cup members mounted radially of a rotating drum to present peripherally an interrupted line of curvature over which the strip &c. is passed, and means for applying suction to the cup members at positions on each side of the cutting position at the moment of cutting and applying pressure through the cup members to project the stapled fibres to a collecting station. The apparatus shown comprises a drum a having bores b slidably housing capillary tubes c which communicate through ports e with cup members d forming the periphery of a feeding wheel which holds, and rotates at the same speed as, the incoming strip which is cut by a rotary knife g driven in synchronism with the drum a and striking through successive spaces f at each revolution. As drum a rotates, bores b are connected sequentially through fixed slip rings, as at h, with separate sources of air pressure so that cup members d hold the filaments and then reject the cut fibres which are withdrawn through a tube o. Variation of the cut length is effected by rotation of a disc s to cause slots r to coact with pins p and shift the tubes c and cup members d radially.
