822,400. Filling tanks. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Aug. 1, 1957 [Aug. 6, 1956], No. 24389/57. Class 21. [Also in Group XXXI] A motor vehicle fuel tank 33, Fig. 3, divided into two sections 46, 47 by a tunnel 44 provided for the passage of a propeller shaft, (see Group XXXI) has a filler pipe 82 arranged to divide the fuel equally between the two sections. The pipe 82 extends into the tank so that its innermost end 86 projects beyond the tunnel 44 to supply fuel to the section 47. Half the fuel is deflected into the section 46 at a point mid-way along the pipe 82 by a cut-away portion 92, Fig. 5, which is pinched inwardly to form a duct. Elliptical depression 89, 91 in the pipe 82 concentrate the incoming fuel in the lower section of the pipe 82 to prevent swirling at the duct 92. A deflector plate 87 prevents fuel flowing along the outside of the pipe 82 after leaving the duet 92. Fuel is withdrawn equally from both sections 46, 47 through filters 96 attached by bracket 97 to the base of the tank. The filters 96 are connected by a pipe 98 conforming to the shape of the tunnel 44 and acting as a syphon pipe to maintain equal levels on each side. The top of the pipe 98 is connected to the outlet pipe 99.
