Abstract
822,334. Valves. PAGE, J. S., sen., and PAGE, J. S. jnr., Oct. 12, 1955 [May 23, 1955], No. 29096/55. Class 135. A fluid handling control valve comprises an elongate tubular body or casing A with a through axial flow passage, a tubular valve member axially movable in the passage by fluid-actuated means such as the piston H, a valve seat member G extending across the flow passage and having a bore 26 to receive one end 42 of the valve member, a by-pass passage 28 round the seat member, and resilient sealing means F between the bore of the seat member and the periphery of the tubular valve member to prevent the flow of fluid through the passage 28 when the valve is closed, the two ends 41, 42 of the valve member being of equal area and always subjected to the pressure in the flow passage. The valve is thus balanced in all positions as regards the controlled fluid. The valve casing A has a stepped-bore including a cylinder 18 in which the piston H operates and an internal flange 14 within which the valve end portion 42 slides, a head or closure C adapted to be connected to a pipe-line P<SP>1</SP> and bored to receive the other valve end portion 41, and a further head or closure B adapted to be connected to a pipe-line P and connected to the seat member G. Operating pressure fluid is admitted to opposite sides of the piston H through pipes 10, 11 under the control of valves or the like. As shown, the seat G is integral with the closure B and is surrounded by an annular passage 28 connected by inclined radial ports 31 to a passage 30 in the pipe-line P. The valve end portions 41, 42 slide in bores 38, 44, respectively, the latter being provided with grooves to receive annular seating rings 75, 53. Similar spaced sealing-rings 62 are provided in the bore or cylinder 18. The closures B, C are screwed into threaded-bores 20, 17 in the casing A and sealed thereto by further packing- rings 69, 72. The outer wall 29 of the flange 14 is tapered inwardly and a rounded flow control member 80 is secured coaxially in the bore 26 of the seat G. The sealing means F between the valve end portion 42 and the seat G comprises a resilient sealing-ring 50 in a groove in one of the parts. The groove may be formed between the part and a flange on ferrule screwed to the part concerned. Fig. 10 shows a flanged resilient ring 50 bonded or otherwise secured to a supporting ring 56. When the valve is closed, the end 42 of the valve member is spaced from the bottom wall 27 of the bore 26. A rod 101 secured to the piston H and projecting through a slot 100 is connected to the control-rod 103 of a lineal electric transmitter which transmits a signal of the valve position.
