Abstract

836,387. Valves. MANNING, MAXWELL & MOORE Inc. Feb. 4, 1958 [Feb. 15, 1957], No. 3603/58. Class 135. In a fluid-pressure operated safety-valve comprising a seat 14, a closure member 16, a pressure-tight bonnet 22 housing an adjustable loading-spring 26, a spindle 24 connected at one end to the closure member, the other end extending into the bonnet 22, and sealing bellows B normally preventing the controlled fluid from entering the bonnet, means is provided to balance the downward force opposing the valve opening movement that would result from failure of the bellows. A threaded hole in the bonnet, which is normally closed by a plug 22a, may be connected to means, not shown, to determine whether the bellows is leak-proof. A balancing piston 37, which has a graphite packing-ring, has a downwardly-extending hollow segmental portion 39 of smaller diameter than the piston proper and embodying a radial slot in the bottom wall 40 through which the spindle 24 passes; the piston is normally supported by a stud 37a in the cylinder wall, the cylinder 34 having a threaded head 34c and being supported on the bonnet 22 and open to the bonnet interior by a clearance between the spindle 24 and a gland 28 by means of which latter the loading of spring 26 is adjusted. In a modification, the cap is threaded into a boss on the bonnet and the piston-rod has a swivel connection to a member threaded to the top of the spindle. In another modification, the piston 37 is replaced by a bellows the inner end of which is clamped between the cylinder base and a flange, both bolted to the bonnet. To ensure rapid opening when a number of valves discharge into a common header, the sealing bellows, and hence the balancing bellows, are made with a larger effective head area than that of the valve seat. The spindle passes through the bellows and is connected to the outer head thereof. In a further modification, the cylinder 34 is dispensed with and the inner bellows end is sealed to the gland.
