Abstract

821,865. Luminescent materials. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Oct. 29, 1957 [Oct. 29, 1956], No. 32903/56. Class 39(1). A luminescent material excited by short wave ultra-violet and cathode rays consists of a cadmium-calcium silicate activated by manganese, the molecular proportion of calcium oxide to (cadmium oxide + calcium oxide) in the silicate being not less than 1% and not more than 39À9%, and the content of manganese being from 0À125 to 0À0125 atoms of manganese for each molecule of (calcium oxide + cadmium oxide) in the silicate. The molecular proportions of calcium oxide can be between 5% and 20% for excitation by short wave ultra violet radiation and between 10% and 30% for excitation by cathode rays. The content of manganese is preferably from 0À05 to 0À07 atoms of manganese for each molecule of (calcium oxide + cadmium oxide). The material can be preferred by heating together at a temperature of from 930‹ to 1070‹C. a mixture of cadmium carbonate, calcium carbonate, silica and manganese chloride in the required proportions. In modifications, manganese chloride is replaced by manganese carbonate and/or calcium chloride or fluoride added in substitution for some or all of the calcium carbonate. Preferably only slightly more than 1 mol of silica should be used per mol of (cadmium oxide + calcium oxide). A specific material is preferred from 0À18 mols of cadmium oxide, 0À02 mols of calcium oxide, 0À21 mols of silica and 0À0114 mols of manganese chloride, which are mixed and fired at 950‹C. for 1¢ hours, at 975‹C. for 1¢ hours and at 1000‹C. for 1¢ hours with intermediate grinding between the firings.
