Abstract

821,701. Chucks. CHRISTEN & CO. A.G. June 13, 1956 [June 25, 1955], No. 18329/56. Class 83 (3). A bevel-closing chuck comprises a chuckbody having slots 2 in which the jaws 3 are movable axially and conical surfaces 5, 8 engaged by inclined surfaces 6, 7 on the jaws for closing the jaws, which remain parallel to themselves during their movement. The chuckbody is formed from a tubular member 1, Fig. 3, and a sleeve 9. The chuck may be supported in bearings in a frame 16 and driven by a belt, or (as shown) may be supported in a single bearing 14 utilizing the member 1 as its inner race, with gear teeth 19 formed on the sleeve 9 for driving the chuck. A knurled operating nut 21, engaging screw-threads 20 on the end of the member 1, is connected to the jaws by the engagement in radial slots 29 in the jaws of projections 28, Fig. 4, from a ring 23 rotatably mounted on the nut but constrained to move axially therewith by pins or screws 24 projecting from the ring into an annular recess 25 in the nut and locked by a ring of wire 26 engaging slots in the heads of the screws. An inner ring 30 transmits operating pressure from the nut to the jaws, which are closed against the influence of two sets of leaf-springs acting between the jaws at both ends or against the influence of springs acting between the jaws and the member 1. The range of the chuck may be extended by jaw-liners 33, Fig. 6, having side-members 37 to slide in longitudinal grooves 35 in the jaws and stops to engage the front ends of the jaws. It is stated that the sleeve 9 could carry a stop to control the angular movement of the chuck and that the gear teeth 19 may control a device for indicating the angular position of the chuck.
