Abstract

821,623. Moulding electric insulators &c. ASHDOWNS Ltd. Dec. 7,1956 [Jan. 13,1956], No. 1309/56. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXXVI] A glass fibre-polyester body, Fig. 6, e.g. for an electric insulator for overhead contact wires of electric traction systems, is formed by winding continuous glass fibre filaments, carrying the liquid polyester resin, around a pair of spaced bobbins to form a skein therebetween, binding the skein filaments together, and moulding and curing the assembly. A strand 1 consisting of a number of continuous glass filaments in parallel formation is supplied by a roll la and passes into a bath Ic of liquid polyester resin, is guided therein by bars le, and if fixed to bobbin If mounted on a winding bar 1g. The bar carries a second bobbin 1j and is rotated to wind the strands between the two bobbins. The bobbins are removed after the resultant skein has been bound together with glass fibre yarn, and the assembly is placed on a mat of glass-fibre felt, Fig. 5 (not shown). After wrapping the felt around the assembly it is placed in a closed mould and moulded under suitable heat and pressure. The bobbins may be of glass fibrepolyester material.
