Abstract
771,109. Slot wedges. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 2, 1955 [Dec. 7, 1954], No. 34575/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 35. Slot wedges of uniform cross-section for use in dynamo-electric machines are formed by passing a roving of glass fibre or other continuous fibrous insulating material through a tank containing a suitable solventless heat polymerizable liquid resin in which the fibres are maintained until they are thoroughly wetted. The liquid resin may consist of substantially equal parts by weight of diethylene glycol maleate and diallyl phthalate to which are added a suitable polymerization catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide. The wetted material then enters a die through a tapered aperture wherein it is cooled to prevent premature hardening. The remainder of the die is heated so that the material is cured in the die at the same time that it is receiving its final shape. Subsequent to emerging from the die, the product may be further heated to complete the curing process, and, when this is finished, the insulating fibres and the solventless polyester will have combined to form a substantially homogeneous strip which is cut into suitable lengths to form the individual wedges.
