Abstract

673,367. Preparing fibres for spinning. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. July 31, 1950 [April 29, 1949], No. 11523/49. Classes 120(i) and 120(iii) [Also in Groups V and VIII] Sheet or strip material comprising fibres or similar small elongated rod-like elements which extend in the same general direction and in overlapping relationship one to another in the general plane of the material are made by impregnating a mass of fibres or similar elements with a liquid which acts as a lubricant and then, by compressing the mass against a surface whose general plane is substantially normal to the direction of applied pressure, extruding it in a direction normal to the direction of applied pressure through a duct which, in cross-section, is a narrow slot or slit shaped with its larger dimension substantially transversely of the direction of applied pressure and of the direction of extrusion. As shown, a plunger 12 compresses the mass 13 vertically within a hollow die 11 whence the mass escapes horizontally as a thin strip 16 through a duct 15 which is narrow vertically but broad horizontally. The fibres may be fragments split from asbestos ore or slivers of textile fibres. The lubricant may be water, or a viscous solution made by heating the fibres after they have been impregnated with a thin solution, or a material capable of setting or hardening, e.g. partly-polymerized phenol-formaldehyde condensation product. The lubricant may be allowed to stay in the mass after extrusion, in which case it may be allowed to set or harden or caused to do so, or may be removed after extrusion, in which case it may be a water-soluble lubricant. An extruded strip containing hardenable material as the lubricant may be pressed or shaped before and/or during hardening. The duct 15 may be heated. The extruded material may be taken away from the duct on an endless travelling openwork or continuous belt to drying or other means for the removal of the impregnant in the case of textile slivers intended for subsequent spinning.
