998,391. Moulding electrical insulators. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 26, 1964 [June 28, 1963], No. 25844/63. Heading B5A. [Also in Division H2] An insulating rod suitable for actuating high tension switchgear is made by winding glass or other insulating fibres over support members 3 to form hank 7, securing their ends, pre-stressing them by forcing the support members apart by means of turnbuckle 6, impregnating them with thermo-setting resin in a mould, curing by heating and, finally, slackening the turnbuckle and removing the composite fibre/resin body. The mould has a flat base plate 2 with removable ends (not shown), walls 8 and top 9. Fibres woven into tapes may be used with separating films of P.T.F.E. or other material to which the thermo-setting resin will not adhere. The ends of the looped double rod may be sawn off so that two single rods remain. Specification 877,689 is referred to.
