Abstract
821,544. Aircraft. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Aug. 24, 1956 [Sept. 8, 1955], No. 25791/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 4. In a delta shaped aircraft for flying at speeds greater than that of sound, a cylindrical heat insulated, pressurized cabin is carried inside the body on four mountings which permit expansion of the craft framework. Two sets of jet engines provide forward motion and lift respectively and the lift engines, which may be tilted about a horizontal axis, are started during forward flight by ram air pressurised by the aircraft motion, and supply compressed air to nozzles for controlling the craft while hovering. The body of the craft acts as a lifting aerofoil and contains forward and rear petrol tanks which are drawn from so as to maintain the craft stability.
