821,479. Percussive tools. CONSOLIDATED PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. Ltd. May 28, 1958 [May 29, 1957], No. 17039/57. Class 124. An implement retainer for a power operated tool comprises a latching member pivoted about an axis perpendicular to the axis of the implement holder on a trunnion that is movable parallel to that axis and is biassed towards an abutment on the tool by an elastomeric mass, one end of which acts on the trunnion and the other end against a shoulder on the tool, the latching member having at least two faces oblique to one another which cooperate with the abutment to hold the latching member in the engaged or disengaged position. As shown, two trunnions 8 are mounted for longitudinal movement in square or dovetail shaped grooves 7 on diametrically opposite sides of the front head 1 of a percussive drill. A stirrup-like latching member 3 is pivoted on the trunnions 8 and the end of each limb is provided with three flat faces 4, 5, 6 oblique to each other, which may engage abutment surfaces 2 on the front head. The bases 9 of the trunnions are engaged by a rigid steel ring 12 which is resiliently urged towards the abutments 2 by an elastomeric annulus 14 which may be bonded to rings 13, 15 the latter engaging a rigid ring 19 secured to the front-head bv a split ring 21. When the face 5 is in contact with the abutment the latching member prevents the steel 18 from slipping out of a clutch and any idle blow of the tool collar 22 against the member is cushioned by the mass 14. When the faces 4 and 2 are in contact the steel may be removed, and when the faces 6 and 2 are in contact pressure on the mass 14 is removed and the rings may be dismantled.
